Police had been unable to tell the age or gender of the victim because the body was so badly charred

  1. In this particular case, age and gender are relevant because they provide starting points for establishing the identity of an unrecognisable body. They become irrelevant only when used to make value judgements about that person.

  2. It is I guess very rare to be able to tell the gender of a person from their charred remains, but in many cases you can tell their sex. The BBC (and perhaps also the police) are using the word gender when they mean sex, and it's absurd and no more than a misleading euphemism.
